According to the Human Development Report 2021/2022, twelve million people live in the Republic of Burundi. More than half of the population are Christians. A civil war raged from 1993 to 2005. To date, the country has barely recovered from its consequences. In addition, the people are struggling with the consequences of climate change. Small farmers are particularly affected. Their harvests regularly fail, which can quickly cause them to lose their livelihoods.
