The republic is Europe's second-largest country by area and has a population of more than 43 million, according to the Human Development Report 2021/2022. In February 2014, a conflict broke out between Russia and Ukraine over the Ukrainian peninsula of Crimea, which continues to this day. Since then, Crimea and parts of the Donetska Oblast have been under Russian control. On February 24, 2022, the conflict escalated into armed war in Ukraine. As a result, according to the United Nations Refugee Agency (UNHCR), more than 13 million Ukrainians are displaced and more than 17 million people are in need of humanitarian assistance.
