With over 17 million inhabitants according to the Human Development Report 2021/2022, Guatemala is the most populous state in Central America. The country has experienced dictatorships and prolonged civil wars in the 20th century. Gang crime, environmental problems caused by rigid mining, great poverty and occasional natural disasters such as floods and landslides characterise the daily lives of many of the predominantly Christian inhabitants.
