Frauen in Saghata, Bangladesch

Sustainable food security and hygiene standards

The Saghata district in the north of Bangladesh is heavily dependent on agriculture. The region is bordered by large rivers that regularly burst their banks and destroy farmers' harvests. This and other extreme weather conditions lead to food insecurity. At the same time, there is a shortage of water in the dry season and there is a lack of suitable irrigation systems to ensure sufficient harvests. There are hardly any alternative sources of income and there is a lack of markets. After disasters, there are government aid programs, but access to these services is difficult or there is a lack of knowledge about the support options. Furthermore, the application of hygiene practices is hardly widespread.
